What is the best month for wildflowers, gardens and green countryside?
Mid May into early June, when three calendars overlap. On the Burren's limestone, the spring flowers peak in May and June: orchids, spring gentians and bloody cranesbill flowering together in the pavement cracks, a mix the National Parks and Wildlife Service protects within the national park there. In the gardens, bluebells carpet woods in late April and May, rhododendrons and azaleas flower through May, and roses take over in June. The countryside itself is at its greenest in those weeks, after the spring growth and before the hay meadows are cut from late June. Two practical notes: many gardens open seasonally and close one or two days a week, so check opening days for the specific garden, and go to the Burren on a weekday morning before the tour coaches arrive.
