What is County Kildare like in winter?
Inland and low lying, Kildare takes the softer Irish winter: frosty mornings and cold snaps on the Curragh rather than snow, which falls on a few days in most winters and rarely lies long on the plain. Met Éireann's long term averages put daytime temperatures in the east in single figures, with rain frequent and daylight down to about seven and a half hours at midwinter. The visitor's calendar shrinks: the National Stud closes from early November to early February, the cathedral shuts to casual visitors outside its May to September season, and Castletown House takes its winter break, though its parkland stays open daily. What winter gives back is empty towpaths, turf fires, quiet towns and hotel rates at their kindest.
