Why are Irish Escapes drive times longer than the times shown by map apps?
Because map apps assume the speed limit is achievable, and on rural Irish roads it often is not. Our planner works from a road dataset of named hub towns with a timed leg for each stretch, and where no timed leg exists it estimates from distance, then pads the estimate by about 25 percent for narrow lanes, villages, tractors and photo stops. A leg we show at two hours is a leg you can plan lunch around, while the app figure is the time on a clear run with no stops. The difference is deliberate: an Irish driving day should be planned on the slower number.
