Which airport should I fly into for the west of Ireland: Dublin, Shannon or Knock?
Shannon, if the flight times suit. It sits between the two great western bases: about 25 minutes from Ennis, an hour and a quarter from Galway, and under two hours from Killarney, with none of Dublin's traffic to escape first. Ireland West Airport at Knock serves the northwest: roughly 45 minutes to Westport and an hour and a quarter to Galway city, and it is the natural gateway for Mayo, Sligo and Donegal. Dublin has by far the widest choice of flights and usually the lowest fares, but you pay for it with a two and a half hour motorway drive to Galway before the holiday starts. Choose by where your first two nights are, not by the fare alone.
