Which places are practical as day trips from Dublin without a car?
Four stand up well. Howth and Malahide sit on the DART line, at roughly 30 minutes and good for a harbour walk and lunch. Glendalough, the monastic valley in the Wicklow Mountains, is the classic organised tour day from the city, and it fills a full day properly. Newgrange and the Boyne Valley also work as a tour day, with timed entry booked ahead. Kilkenny is the rail option: Irish Rail trains from Heuston take about 1 hour 30 minutes, and the castle and medieval lanes sit close to the station. Belfast by Enterprise train, at about 2 hours 10 minutes, is the long version.
