What should I do if a rural bus or train connection is missed?
First, check the real position rather than the printed one. The TFI Live app and Transport for Ireland's live departures show whether the onward service is also running late, and operator service update pages list cancellations and replacement buses. If staff are present, ask them: drivers and station staff deal with missed rural connections daily and know the workable alternative. Then take the next service and replan the day around it, because rural frequencies can mean a wait of hours and Sunday services are sparse. Keep a taxi number for the nearest town as the last resort, and never build a tight rural connection in front of a ferry or a flight.
