Are guided day tours better than self driving for the Ring of Kerry?
It depends who is holding the wheel. The Ring is a 179 kilometre loop that takes about 3 hours 30 minutes of pure driving and a full day once stops are counted. A guided day tour from Killarney removes the narrow road stress, follows a set order of stops and adds a driver's account of the places, but the timetable is fixed and the photo stops are short. Self driving gives you the Skellig Ring detour, lunch where you choose and an early start ahead of the coaches. Our southwest itinerary advises driving the Ring clockwise, while tour buses travel the other way. Nervous drivers should take the tour.
