Which events are best for visitors who want Irish culture without huge crowds?
Pick the second tier of the calendar and the edges of the day. Town and county festivals built for their own neighbours, such as the Kilkenny Arts Festival over ten August days, spread audiences across churches, gardens and small venues rather than one main stage. Daytime recitals at Wexford, morning events at larger festivals, and January's TradFest all run easier than a headline Saturday night. Weekday performances are quieter than weekends in the same festival. The pattern that works is one anchor event a day, booked ahead, with unbooked time in the town around it. Our festival guide picks out the smaller fixtures, and the events page shows which are confirmed for your dates.
