What is the Fleadh Cheoil, and how does it change the town hosting it?
The Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is the All Ireland festival of traditional music, song and dance, organised by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann each August. At its core sit competitions: players qualify through county and provincial fleadhanna, then compete for All Ireland titles across instruments, singing, céilí bands and dance. Around that, the host town fills for a week. Sessions run in pubs and on street corners, concerts and gig rigs take over public spaces, and visitor numbers can reach several hundred thousand, far beyond the town's usual population. Beds, parking and road space all come under pressure, so book accommodation early and expect the town centre to belong to the music.
