What should I know before going to the National Ploughing Championships?
Go expecting a small town built in fields for three days each September. The National Ploughing Championships, organised by the National Ploughing Association, combine the ploughing competitions with machinery, livestock, trade stands, food and rural business on a site that runs to hundreds of acres, with very large crowds each day. Follow the official traffic plan and the Garda signs on approach roads rather than your sat nav, park in the colour coded car parks, and note your row. Wear boots or sturdy waterproof shoes even in dry weather, bring layers, and pick a meeting point, as phone signal can strain. Buy tickets from the organisers and allow a full day.
