What are the best scenic drives in County Kildare?
Kildare's scenery is gentle rather than grand, and its best driving is slow. Cross the Curragh on the local roads at dawn or evening, sheep on the verges and the gallops busy, then drop to Kildare town for the cathedral. The canal corridor makes a fine meander: Sallins and the Leinster Aqueduct, Robertstown's basin, then the Barrow Line south through Rathangan to Monasterevin and Athy, stopping wherever a lock takes your fancy. In the north, run the Liffey side from Celbridge past the gates of Castletown. And the old Dublin road through Naas and Castledermot strings the high crosses together: Moone is a short detour off it, and worth every mile.
