What speed limits apply on motorways, national roads, regional roads and in towns?
In the Republic, in kilometres per hour: 120 on motorways, 100 on national roads, 80 on regional and local roads, and 50 in built up areas, with lower signed limits, 30 in many town centres among them, wherever the signs say so. The signed number governs, not the category of road. Cross into Northern Ireland and everything flips to miles per hour: 70 on motorways and dual carriageways, 60 on single carriageways, 30 in built up areas. The change happens at an unmarked border, and the speedometer habit has to change with it.
