How do toll roads work in Ireland, especially the M50 barrier free toll?
Most Irish toll roads have a barrier plaza where you pay by card or cash as you pass. The M50 around Dublin is the exception. Between Junction 6 (Blanchardstown) and Junction 7 (Lucan) cameras read the number plate and there is nowhere to stop and pay. For a car in 2026 the charge is €3.80 with no account, €3.20 on a video account and €2.60 with a tag. Pay online at eflow.ie, by phone or at a Payzone shop by 8pm on the day after you travel, or a €4 penalty is added, with further penalties of €51 and then €128 after that. Rental companies handle it differently, so ask at the desk.
