What are Irish rural roads really like, and how much extra time should I allow?
Expect narrow to be the default: two cars passing with care, hedges and stone walls at the edge of the tarmac, and bends that hide tractors, cyclists and walkers. Our road dataset allows for that. Galway to Clifden is 68 kilometres and we time it at 75 minutes; Killarney to Dingle is 67 kilometres and 70 minutes; the same distance on a motorway would take half that. As a working rule, take the time a mapping app gives you for a rural leg and add a third, then add stops on top. Arriving relaxed an hour later beats every shortcut a local would not take.
