Where can I plan a fishing trip around the Corrib, Erne, Shannon or Killarney lakes?
Choose the water by the fishing you want. Lough Corrib, reached from Galway and Cong, is noted for wild brown trout, and trout fishing there needs no licence or permit on Inland Fisheries Ireland rules, though you will need a boat. Lough Erne bases you in Enniskillen, between the upper and lower loughs, in Northern Ireland's separate licensing system. The Shannon suits a slow, boat based trip through Carrick-on-Shannon and Athlone, with ESB permits applying on some salmon fisheries. The Killarney lakes mix trout and salmon water inside the national park. Salmon and sea trout anywhere in the Republic need a state licence, bought through Inland Fisheries Ireland before you fish.
