Where are the best lake districts for a quieter Ireland trip?

Three districts do this best, and they feel quite different. Fermanagh is water first: Upper and Lower Lough Erne, more than a hundred islands and Enniskillen doing its business between the two loughs, with Devenish Island's round tower reached by boat. The Shannon lakelands around Carrick-on-Shannon and Lough Key give you cruisers, forest park trails and small towns at a slow pace. In the midlands, Lough Ennell and Belvedere near Mullingar and Lough Derg, on the Shannon in north Tipperary, keeps things quieter still. Waterways Ireland manages much of the Shannon and Erne navigation, so hire and mooring detail starts there.
