Where are the best lake and river spots in County Kildare?
Kildare is a canals and rivers county rather than a lakes one. The River Barrow gives the scenery: walk its towpath at Monasterevin, where the canal and the river meet and the town is nicknamed the Venice of Ireland, or at Athy, where the Barrow widens past the White Castle. Robertstown, where the Grand Canal meets the Barrow Line, is the classic canal village, with barges moored along the bank. Donadea's small lake, ringed by the forest park's easiest loop, is the county's prettiest still water. Pollardstown Fen is spring water rather than a lake: a boardwalk over clear pools and orchid ground fed by the Curragh aquifer.
