What is there to do in Bangor in one day?
Begin at Bangor Abbey, the parish church on the site of the abbey Saint Comgall founded in the sixth century: this was one of the great monastic schools of early Ireland, and the place still carries that weight quietly. Walk up to Bangor Castle for the North Down Museum and the walled garden in Castle Park, at their best in late spring and summer. Lunch in the town centre. Then go down to the front: the marina, the promenade and the Eisenhower Pier, with views across Belfast Lough to the Antrim coast. If legs allow, finish on the North Down Coastal Path, west along the lough shore, and let the day end on the path rather than in the car.
