What is there to do in Ballina in one day?
Start at the Ridge Pool: anglers fishing the Moy below St Muredach's Cathedral are Ballina's defining sight, and early morning is the time to watch them. Walk to the Jackie Clarke Collection on Pearse Street, one local businessman's remarkable hoard of Irish historical documents, maps and objects, kept in a former bank, and give it a full hour. Lunch in town, on the river side if you can. Then walk Belleek Woods, one of Ireland's largest urban woodlands, on the banks of the Moy estuary: flat, shaded trails just north of the town. Finish back at the bridges, where the cathedral above the Ridge Pool in the last of the light is the photograph everyone takes, fairly earned.
