What is the best day trip from Bantry?
Glengarriff, about 20 minutes north on the N71, and then out on the water. From the harbour there, the boats cross to Garinish Island, usually passing the seal colony on the way: 15 hectares of gardens on the island, with an Italian garden, a Grecian temple and a Martello tower, created by the Bryce family with the designer Harold Peto. The island opens from late March to the start of November and the boats run daily from April to the end of October, so check the season before building a winter day on it. Run the gardens in the morning, lunch in Glengarriff village, and the blue pool and woods above the harbour after.
