What is the best day trip from Ballina?
North, up the coast road to the Céide Fields, about 30 minutes away beyond Ballycastle. Under the blanket bog lies the most extensive Stone Age monument in the world: stone-walled fields laid out almost 6,000 years ago and preserved by the bog that covered them, explained by the visitor centre on the cliff edge, where a viewing platform stands 110 metres above the Atlantic. The centre opens daily from mid March to early November and takes bookings only through the winter, so this is a spring to autumn trip. Run it as the fields in the morning, Ballycastle and the north coast after, and back to Ballina by evening.
