What is the best day trip from Adare?
Limerick City, and it is barely a trip at all: about 20 minutes up the N21. Go for King's Island and the old city: King John's Castle on the river, open seven days, tells the Norman and siege story of the Shannon's great crossing, and the medieval streets around it carry the rest of the morning. Cross into the modern centre for lunch and the shops, and give the afternoon to the city's galleries and riverside. Be back in Adare for dinner. It is the day trip that costs almost nothing in driving and pays in contrast: Adare is cottages and quiet, and Limerick is a working river city.
