What is the best base town in County Galway?
Galway City, for almost everyone: the music, the food and the buses and trains are there, and Connemara and the island ferries run west from it. Clifden is the better base for a Connemara-only trip: mornings start inside the landscape instead of driving to it, and the Sky Road is on your doorstep, but evenings are quieter and the city becomes the day trip. Splitting the stay, two nights in the city and one or two in Clifden, is the pattern we would choose with four days or more. What we would not do is base in the east of the county and commute to everything.
