What is the best base town in County Clare?
Ennis, if you are moving around: it is the county town, central for the Burren, Bunratty and the Shannon side, with the county's best choice of places to eat and its traditional music in pubs every night of the week. Doolin, if the coast is the trip: you sleep beside the cliffs' end of the county, the Aran ferry leaves below the village, and the sessions in its pubs are the famous ones, though the village is small and books out in season. Lahinch suits surfers and golfers between the two. Our own pick for a first visit is Ennis with a night in Doolin added, rather than either one asked to do everything.
