What is the best base town in County Cavan?
Cavan town is the practical base: the county town, the museum, and the roads out to both the lakes and the north-west sights. It is a working market town, not a beauty spot, and that is fine, because the county's beauty is out on the water. Virginia is the nicer stay if the lakes are your trip: it sits on Lough Ramor with fishing and lakeside places to eat, and it is the town people return to. Belturbet suits anyone travelling the Shannon-Erne Waterway. For a first visit we would sleep in Cavan town for reach, or Virginia for pleasure, and not try to split the difference elsewhere.
