What is the best base town in County Carlow?
Carlow town is the only base of any size: the castle, the cathedral, the pubs and the train to Dublin are all there, and the whole county is a short drive in any direction. Choose Borris instead if the stay is the point rather than the sightseeing: it is a small estate village under the Blackstairs with the mountain walks at the door, and it is the prettiest place to sleep in the county. Bagenalstown sits between the two on the Barrow and suits a Barrow Way walking trip. Wherever you stay, evenings are local and early, which is Carlow being itself.
