What is the best base town in County Armagh?
Armagh city itself, and there is no close second. It is small, but everything the county is known for is in it or beside it: the two cathedrals, Navan Fort, the planetarium, and the streets St Patrick's first church made a city of. Evenings are quiet rather than lively, which suits the place. Lurgan and Portadown are working towns with commuter trains, useful to pass through and not visitor bases. Crossmaglen puts you under the Ring of Gullion for walking, but as a village stay it means eating where you sleep. Sleep in the city, drive south for the hills.
