What is Donadea Forest Park, and what is its 9/11 memorial?
Donadea is 243 hectares of woodland in the north west of the county, run by Coillte on what was once the Aylmer family estate: there is a ruined castle, a walled garden, a church and a small lake among the trees. Walks run from the flat Lake Walk of under a kilometre, fine for wheels and buggies, to the Aylmer Loop of about five kilometres. The 9/11 memorial stands near the entrance: a scaled limestone copy of the Twin Towers, raised in memory of Sean Tallon, a young New York firefighter who died in the attacks and whose family had emigrated from Donadea. There is a café by the car park, open through the year.
