What are the main places to stop between Dublin and Belfast?

The direct motorway run is about an hour and forty five minutes in our road dataset, and the stops worth breaking it for sit just off that line. First, Drogheda on the Boyne, then Monasterboice for Muiredach's Cross and the high crosses at the early monastic site nearby, and Mellifont Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, founded in 1142. Further north, Dundalk is the working border town stop, and the detour east to Carlingford, with its medieval streets and harbour under Slieve Foy on Carlingford Lough, is the one worth an extra hour. Done in that order, the transfer day becomes a Boyne Valley day.
