What are the best walks in County Kildare for a first visit?
The canal towpaths are Kildare's walking gift: flat, waymarked and full of locks, barges and herons. The Barrow Way follows the Barrow Line of the Grand Canal from Robertstown through Rathangan and Monasterevin to Athy, then runs with the river on towards St Mullin's, and most visitors walk a stage rather than the whole route. The Grand Canal Way crosses the county through Sallins, where the canal rides over the Liffey on the Leinster Aqueduct. For woodland, Donadea Forest Park has loops from the short, wheelchair friendly Lake Walk to the Aylmer Loop of about five kilometres, and Pollardstown Fen has a boardwalk over Ireland's largest spring-fed fen. On the Curragh, keep to roads and marked paths: it is common land, shared with sheep and the army.
