What are the best things to do in County Kildare?
Kildare is horse country first, and the Irish National Stud at Tully is the place to start: foals in the paddocks in spring, the Irish Racehorse Experience, and two gardens, the formal Japanese Gardens and the wilder St Fiachra's Garden, all on one ticket. In Kildare town, climb the round tower beside St Brigid's Cathedral for the view over the Curragh, the great open plain where racehorses train at dawn and the Irish Derby is run each summer. Castletown House at Celbridge is Ireland's largest Palladian mansion, Donadea Forest Park gives you woodland walks around a lake, and the canal towpaths at Robertstown and Sallins are made for slow afternoons.
