What are the best things to do in County Cavan?
Take the boat or a kayak out to Cloughoughter Castle, a ruined tower standing in Lough Oughter: the county in one picture. Then walk the Cuilcagh boardwalk, the Stairway to Heaven, on the Fermanagh border, booking ahead in season because the car park fills. Cavan Burren Park gives you tombs, glacial boulders and limestone in a short, well-laid-out walk, and the Shannon Pot, the pool where the Shannon rises, is worth the detour for what it is rather than how it looks. Killykeen Forest Park is the gentle option: lakeside trails on Lough Oughter. If time is short, the Shannon Pot is the one to drop; it is a small pool with a big story.
