Is Kildare Town worth an overnight stay or just a stop?
An overnight, if you can. The town's best moments sit at the edges of the day: dawn on the Curragh with the strings of racehorses heading to the gallops, the round tower in first light, and the Stud before the day trip buses arrive. Staying also turns the town into a base: Naas, Donadea and the racecourse are all a short drive, and Dublin is about half an hour by train when you want it. As a pure stop it still works, ninety minutes for the cathedral, the square and the well, but drivers passing on the M7 see the least interesting version of a town founded by St Brigid fifteen centuries ago.
