How do I use a themed trip type in the planner, and can I mix themes?

Yes, mixing themes is the normal way to use it. Open the planner, pick a trip type such as Castles, Lakes, Music or a Surname Trip, and it loads a starting route built from places carrying that theme, grouped into days at that type's pace: Family runs shortest at about three hours a day, Road trip longest at about five. Then treat the route as a draft. Add a stop from another theme, a food town on a castles route, say, delete what does not interest you, and move stops between days. The days, overnight bases and drive times rebuild after each change, and Custom starts from blank if you would rather build the whole trip yourself.
