Cork or Killarney: which is the better base for the southwest?
Killarney is the better touring base, Cork the better city base, and the honest answer depends on the days you have. Killarney sits at the edge of the national park, with the lakes at the end of the street, the Ring of Kerry starting from town and Dingle about an hour and ten minutes away in our road dataset. Cork city, about an hour and fifteen minutes from Killarney, gives you the English Market, Cobh and Kinsale, plus West Cork if the trip stretches. With three nights or fewer, pick Killarney. With five, sleep in both and eat best in Cork.
