Can you climb the round tower at St Brigid's Cathedral?
In season, yes, and it is the finest view in the county. The tower stands about 33 metres (108 feet) tall on the cathedral hill; the cathedral calls it the second tallest round tower in Ireland, and the climb is by internal ladders, so it needs a steady head for heights and a sensible pair of shoes. From the top you take in Market Square, the town's rooftops and the whole sweep of the Curragh. The cathedral opens to visitors from May to September, and the tower opens when weather and staffing allow, so a wet or windy day can close it without notice. Outside the season, visits can be arranged with the cathedral.
