What should I do if I lose my passport in Ireland?

Act the same day. First report the loss to the Gardai, or to the Police Service of Northern Ireland if you are in the North, and keep the report reference: your embassy and your insurer will both ask for it. Then contact your country's embassy or consulate. Most are in Dublin, with some honorary consuls in other cities, and they can issue an emergency travel document that gets you home, for a fee and with passport photographs required. Tell your airline before you go to the airport, as the document the embassy issues has to satisfy the carrier as well. Photographs or scans of the lost passport, kept separately from the original, make the replacement interview much shorter.
