Do I need euros and pounds on the same Ireland trip?
Both, if the trip crosses the border. The Republic uses the euro. Northern Ireland uses pounds sterling, and neither currency is generally accepted on the other side. Cards soften the problem: the same card works in both, charged in the local currency each time. Carry a small float of each if you are touring both: euros for the Republic, pounds for the North. The border itself has no checkpoints and no currency controls. The change shows up in prices and in road signs, not at any barrier.
