Can I drink alcohol in public places in Ireland?
Treat the answer as no in most town and city centres. There is no single national law on it in the Republic, but most councils have bye laws that ban drinking in streets, parks and other public places, and the Gardai can confiscate open alcohol and move people on where those bye laws apply. Northern Ireland's councils run a similar system, with designated public places where drinking is prohibited and signs to say so. The exceptions are licensed spaces: a pub's fenced outdoor area, a ticketed festival enclosure, a private garden. A sealed bottle carried home from an off licence is a different matter from an open one on the street. If an officer asks you to pour a drink away, do it without argument and the matter ends there.
