What Irish foods and drinks can I take home, and what may customs restrict?

Packaged goods travel well and cause no trouble: tea, chocolate, biscuits, preserves, smoked fish in sealed packs and whiskey within your duty free allowance. The restrictions bite on fresh and animal products, and they are set by the country you land in, not the one you leave. Travelling within the EU, food for personal use moves freely. Flying to the United States is the strict case: all food must be declared, meat and meat products including sausages and black pudding are refused, and many dairy goods are restricted, though hard cheese is generally allowed. Eat the fresh haul in Ireland, post nothing perishable, and declare everything.
