Tullamore
The Grand Canal made this town, and the harbour, locks and towpath still run through its centre. Tullamore is the county town of County Offaly.
Clonmacnoise on the Shannon and Birr's telescope are the two great stops, with bog, canal and the Slieve Bloom foothills between them. A heritage county that rewards a planned day.
County Offaly, in the heart of the midlands, pairs important heritage with classic bog and river landscapes. Clonmacnoise, the great early Christian monastery where the Shannon meets the Esker Riada, is one of Ireland's most evocative sites, while Birr pairs a castle and science centre with a pretty heritage town.
The Shannon forms the county's western border, the Grand Canal crosses it at Tullamore, a town long associated with whiskey, and the Slieve Bloom Mountains rise in the south. Lough Boora Discovery Park shows how cutaway bog can be reborn as parkland, sculpture and wildlife habitat. The county rewards a heritage-focused itinerary: a morning at Clonmacnoise while the Shannon is quiet, an afternoon in Birr's gardens, and a canal-side evening in Tullamore. It is also an easy, scenic link between the east coast and Galway or the Shannon.

The Great Telescope in the castle grounds was the largest in the world for decades, built by the Earl of Rosse in the 1840s. Birr grew up around the castle, and its Georgian malls keep the planned look.
Canal town in the east of the county.
Small town known for its bog and jute-weaving history.
Spring to autumn is best for gardens, bog parks and monastery visits. Birr's gardens are a highlight from spring bulbs through autumn colour.
Tullamore is about an hour west of Dublin by motorway and on the main rail line. Dublin Airport is the nearest airport.
No anchor festival is based here, but the Irish year is full: next up nationally is TradFest (20–24 Jan 2027, Temple Bar, Dublin). See the full events calendar

The Slieve Bloom Mountains are among Ireland's quietest walking hills, and the county below them keeps a slow midlands pace: Dunamase's rock, Emo Court and heritage towns.

Lakes fill the middle of the county: Ennell, Owel and Derravaragh, with the Shannon and Athlone on the western edge. Belvedere's house and gardens are the set piece.

A low-key midlands county of bogs, lakes and the Royal Canal, with an Iron Age bog road at Corlea as its remarkable sight. Goldsmith and Edgeworth give it literary roots.
