Birr

The Great Telescope in the castle grounds was the largest in the world for decades, built by the Earl of Rosse in the 1840s. Birr grew up around the castle, and its Georgian malls keep the planned look.

Birr Castle Demesne and the Great Telescope

Birr Castle's grounds contain gardens, a science centre and the Great Telescope built in the 1840s for the Earl of Rosse. For a time it was the largest telescope in the world, and the castle itself remains the Parsons family home.

Oxmantown Mall and John's Mall

Birr's broad, tree-lined malls are lined with Georgian houses and are among the town's defining streetscapes. They give Birr its reputation as a planned heritage town.

St Brendan's Church and the Old Town Streets

The streets around Emmet Square and the town's churches preserve Birr's Georgian and early Victorian character. A short walk links the main square, the malls and the castle gates.

River Camcor Walks

The River Camcor runs through Birr below the castle demesne. Riverside paths give quieter views of the town away from the main streets.

Where to stand, and when

Birr through history

Birr developed around Birr Castle, the seat of the Parsons family, later Earls of Rosse.

In the 1840s the third Earl of Rosse built the Great Telescope at Birr, which remained the world's largest telescope for decades and was used to observe the spiral structure of galaxies.

Birr was laid out substantially as a planned estate and garrison town, which explains its wide malls and Georgian terraces.

The castle demesne's gardens and science collections reflect generations of the Parsons family's interests in astronomy, engineering and botany.
