Monaghan
St Macartan's Cathedral watches the town from its hill, spire first. Monaghan is the county town, in the drumlin country of the north midlands.
Patrick Kavanagh's drumlin country: small hills, lakes and market towns, with Carrickmacross lace and Lough Muckno's shore for slow days.
The drumlin belt of the border region is all small hills, lakes and market towns, and Monaghan is its heart. It is best known as the home ground of the poet Patrick Kavanagh, whose work celebrated its stony grey soil and small farms, and whose centre in Inniskeen tells his story.
Monaghan's towns, Monaghan, Carrickmacross, Castleblayney and Clones, each carry their own heritage, from Carrickmacross lace to Clones' round tower and high cross. Lough Muckno near Castleblayney offers waterside walks and activities, and the county's quiet roads suit cycling and slow touring between the border hills. The county also has a strong food and craft tradition, from its lace to its mushrooms and farm produce, and its towns make friendly, good-value bases. It pairs well with Armagh, Cavan and Fermanagh on a border-counties touring route.

Ireland's ecclesiastical capital keeps two cathedrals for Saint Patrick and orchards around Loughgall that fill with blossom in spring. Drumlin country rolls away in every direction.

Lakes at every turn of the road: a drumlin county of small hills, islands and water, with Lough Oughter and its island castle at the centre.

Water is the county: Upper and Lower Lough Erne, more than a hundred islands and an island county town at Enniskillen. Hire a boat and the place makes sense.
