Monaghan
St Macartan's Cathedral watches the town from its hill, spire first. Monaghan is the county town, in the drumlin country of the north midlands.
Best sites to see in Monaghan
St Macartan's Cathedral
The Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Clogher stands on a hill above Monaghan town. Its tall spire is the town's most recognisable landmark and the interior is richly decorated stonework.
Monaghan County Museum
The county museum in the town centre covers the history of County Monaghan, including archaeology, local life and the Cross of Clogher among its best-known exhibits.
The Market House and the Diamond
The Market House in the Diamond, the town's central square, is a fine late 18th-century stone building. The Diamond and Church Square form the historic commercial heart of the town.
Rossmore Park
A short drive from the town, Rossmore Park is a forest park with lakes, woodland walks and the remains associated with the former Rossmore estate. It is the main outdoor escape on Monaghan's doorstep.
Where to stand, and when
- St Macartan's Cathedral from below its hill: Morning light suits the front of the cathedral and shows the spire clearly above the town rooftops.
- The lakeside walks in Rossmore Park: Go on a bright morning or late afternoon for reflections on the park's lakes and softer light through the trees.
- The Market House in the Diamond: Photograph it early in the day, when the square is quieter and the stone facade is evenly lit.
Monaghan through history
Monaghan is the county town of County Monaghan, a drumlin county in the north midlands bordering Northern Ireland.
The diocese centred on nearby Clogher is associated with St Macartan, a companion of St Patrick in tradition, and St Macartan's Cathedral in Monaghan is its modern cathedral.
Much of the town centre, including the Market House and its squares, took its present shape in the 17th to 19th centuries.
Rossmore Park was once part of the estate of the Rossmore family, whose former castle there no longer stands.
Practical tips
- The town centre is compact, so park once and walk between the cathedral hill, the museum and the Diamond.
- Rossmore Park is a drive rather than a town-centre walk, so plan it as a separate half-day with walking shoes.
- Monaghan makes a practical base for the drumlin lakelands, but many rural sights are spread out, so allow generous driving time.
