Where do I research ancestors from County Cavan?
Cavan Genealogy, based in Johnston Central Library on Farnham Street in Cavan town, is the county's Irish Family History Foundation centre, and its database is the starting point: close to a million records, mostly before 1920, covering every Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Methodist parish in the county, on RootsIreland. The library's local studies department is in the same building, and the county archives service sits behind both. Cavan's rewards are its early records: Church of Ireland registers from Kilmore begin in 1702, and the 1841 census for Killeshandra parish survives almost complete, a rare thing in Ireland, where the early censuses were nearly all destroyed.
