Where does the Irish Escapes surname information come from?
From two public domain works. The distribution comes from R. E. Matheson, the Registrar General, whose Special Report on Surnames in Ireland analysed the 1890 birth registers and published, for each county, the names principally found there. The Irish forms and meanings lean on Patrick Woulfe, Irish Names and Surnames (1923). For each of our 795 names we show where Matheson's tables rooted it in 1890, and the Irish form and meaning where those sources give them. Nothing on the map is estimated from modern data: it is a Victorian registrar's count, checked name by name.
