What is Griffiths Valuation, and how can it place my family on an exact townland?
Griffith's Valuation, properly the Primary Valuation, was a survey of every property in Ireland published between 1847 and 1864 to set the local tax called the Poor Rate. For each townland it names the occupier of every holding, the landlord or immediate lessor, the size of the plot and its rateable value. AskAboutIreland puts the printed pages and the matching Ordnance Survey maps online free. Each entry carries a map reference, a number and letter, and that reference picks out the exact plot on the map. It names occupiers only, not whole households, so it places a family head on a specific piece of ground rather than listing the family.
