The Rock of Cashel stands over the Golden Vale, and the Suir runs through castle towns below it. Ireland's largest inland county also reaches Lough Derg in the north.
One sight dominates: the Rock of Cashel, an ancient fortified hill crowned with a round tower, cathedral and chapel, standing over Ireland's largest inland county. Around it stretches the Golden Vale, rich farmland between the Galtee, Knockmealdown and Silvermine mountains.
The River Suir threads through towns like Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir and Cahir, where a fine castle guards the river. In the north, the county reaches Lough Derg on the Shannon, with lakeside villages like Terryglass and Garrykennedy. Horse racing and breeding are woven into Tipperary life, from Coolmore's studs to its racecourses. Give the county more than the Rock alone: the Suir valley towns, a walk in the Galtees or Knockmealdowns, and a lakeside evening on Lough Derg show its range. It also sits conveniently between Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford for touring itineraries.

Ireland's oldest city holds the Viking Triangle, and the county opens out behind it: the Copper Coast, the Comeraghs and the Greenway to Dungarvan.

A medieval city with its castle, cathedral and lanes intact, and hurling in its blood. Beyond it the Nore and Barrow valleys settle into villages and abbey ruins.

The Shannon shapes the city and the county: King John's Castle on King's Island, the Golden Vale inland and the Ballyhouras for walking and biking in the south.
