What is Transfer of Residence relief when I ship my belongings to Ireland?

It is the customs relief that lets you bring your household goods and personal belongings, including a private car, into Ireland free of customs duty and VAT when you move here permanently from outside the EU. The conditions are plain: you have lived outside the EU continuously for at least twelve months, you owned and used the goods for at least six months before the move, and you import them within six months before or twelve months after you move. You then keep them: selling, lending or giving them away inside twelve months brings the charges back. Alcohol, tobacco beyond the traveller allowances, trade tools and commercial vehicles get no relief. The form is Revenue's C and E 1076, sent to Revenue at your port of entry about two weeks before the goods arrive.
