How do I get an Irish passport for the first time as an adult abroad?
Apply through Passport Online, the Irish Passport Service's online system, which is the route the Department of Foreign Affairs directs first-time applicants abroad to use. You upload a digital photograph, pay online, and then post the supporting documents: your full birth certificate, proof of your Irish citizenship (a parent's Irish birth certificate, or your Foreign Births Registration certificate), proof of your name and address, and your current passport or ID. A first application also needs an identity verification form signed by a witness from the listed professions, such as a police officer, teacher, doctor or lawyer, who knows you. Current turnaround times are published by the Passport Service and change with demand, so check them before you book travel around a new passport.
